Make an offer of what you are willing to pay. They can then choose to take it, leave it, or counter-offer.

People are free to charge whatever they choose. I just move on to the next seller. If it is something no other seller has, well, then how do you know they are charging too much?

parts are just like fuel dont like the price go someplace else.
if i have to pay more for a part that is correct and on the shelf i will pay the extra rather than waiting 2 or 3 to get it from a dealership.

one has to remember some people are in busness to sell parts and need to make a living off of selling items. the longer a part sits on a shelf the more money a seller loses or ties up in inventory.

if you have rare parts there is little market for them and can take a long time to sell.

I have a set of grab bars on ebay that have been listed there for months no takers yet but they will sell when someone wants them

are they over priced I do not know but no one has made an offer my price is inline on other grab bars i have purchased ( if you are on this site and want them pm me do not go through ebay you will get the xjbikes family discount)

I think you find some people who are willing to price parts for the enjoyment of those people wrenching. Then some people feel "If I have touched it well its worth twice the price". Many places around our world feel that if you don't "offer and counter offer" you are not a very good buyer and seller.

The game is to offer and counter offer without offending someone. Watch a few youtube vids from either "American pickers" or "Pawn stars" and get a feel from what they do. Sure it is in front of the camera but it is true to how wheedlers and deals work.

Agreed, haggling is much more common, and expected, outside the USA.

On used/private sales, it should not be offensive. Even in retail, if you talk to the manager, you can often get nice discounts, particularly at inventory time. We once "haggled" 2 childrens bikes for the price of one at ToysRus. I simply made an offer, and it was accepted. Of course, be polite.

It used to be I could deal down large appliances when I needed replacing, fridge, stove, dishwasher, washer/dryer, from retail stores. I think it is harder now. Still works on Ebay though.

Those are the most expensive parts I’ve ever seen. If they were new in box maybe. Oem look seat cover is about 50$ ( I did my seat) rear cowl should be a few out there

Alot of the price for parts will be determined on how difficult it is to find said part.
If it's still in production, than you can shop around.
If it's something that hasn't been manufactured for 20 years you're at the mercy of hunting for one until you find a seller that has it for a price that you are willing to pay, and sometimes that takes years. to accomplish.

As to your examples......the seller didn't really want to sell.
I got my custom Corbin seat (used) for $40. He was asking you to buy a used seat for brand-new custom seat prices.
The rear cowling and grab bar for a 650 Seca an fetch a bit, but for any of the other models he was about $290 high.

In the case of my Seca's, my Johnny Cash bike ( literally one piece at a time) it was an engine and a frame bought at a swap meet for 100$ got pieces off of eBay, from friends , swap meets , xj4ever... parts for these bikes are still out there but some items are getting a little harder to find ...hence higher prices . I normally try to buy from xj4ever as he has both factory parts as well as pattern parts , and chacal stand by his parts . Yes some folks say his prices are higher than the guy down the street well that is how it goes my favorite saying is " Buy the best cry once" moral of this you buy something used off of eBay or else where is it actually a good part ? . My bikes are mine paid for and have virtually rebuilt both in essence they are both new bikes
