Hi I currently have a bike I'm going to put an engine in, I do not know the condition of the engine, I did pull the valve covers and checked the valve shims, they're pretty tight all the way around I'm getting between 0.07mm - 0.09mm for Intake side and 0.15mm - 0.20mm for the exhaust side,

My question is can I run this engine with these tolerances just to make sure it isn't junk without hurting it? I'm talking just a couple minutes and assuming it runs I'll properly shim it, I just do not own the tool or want to deal with finding the right shims if the engine is no good.

Thanks for listening, this forum is great I've gone from never sitting on a motorcycle ever to pretty much disassembling and rewiring my entire bike in a short amount of time, I've actually spent more time working on them than riding though haha couldn't do it without the helpful people here.

I think it should be fine to run with those gaps just to get it running. They aren’t that bad.

That's a relief, I have another engine I tried getting shims out using the wire trick to maybe see if I could use any of them but I had trouble getting the shim outta the bucket so I gave up for now, lotta work for engine that may not run lol, thanks for the reply

I’ve never tried the wire method. I’ve got the bucket hold down tool - but even that is a little tricky and has a learning curve. Once you do a few of them you will get the hang of it. Once you do it a few dozen times it will be boring.

A few doz en valves, not a few dozen bikes. Sometimes you have to perform the procedure twice per valve to check it and then replace it. So you can get a lot of practice real fast.
