but i cant help doing alot of recon before a possible purchase. anyone know where the VIN is located on the frame of a 79 XS650? to transfer a title in PA from out of state they will need to verify the VIN. Last time I did it they used a picture on a digital camera but they say they cant do that anymore. a VIN etching will work though. strange that i can walk in with some pencil scribbling on paper and thats better than a digital picture.
as always, thanks for the help.

Hey,Fonz. The vin should be stamped on the steering head area of the frame, behind the headlight. Good luck!

If it's like the XJs the stamped number is not the full VIN. It is the frame serial number. There are extra characters in the VIN that indicate region of manufacture, plant, model and a check digit. Although that expanded VIN might not have kicked in until the early 80s.

You might want to double check with your state to make sure they won't have any issues.

i remember that from when i was transferring the title for my XJ. I didnt think the woman was going to put it through but I had two pictures of it from the frame and the motor and thats what was on the POs title so thats how they put it through. how would one find out those extra numbers?

Actually my bike was less than the standard 17 digit as well because it is so old. The insurance people and DMV can work around it given a little time and someone who knows what they are doing.(Or is willing to fiddle around till they figure it out.)

seems like a pain in the ass. Im trying to get insurance through progressive online and they will not allow a VIN less than 17 characters online.

I so wanna get this thing insured and ready to go this week.

I had the same problem. I had to go into the office and talk to a rep, and after a while she got it taken care of. Coincidentally, through progressive. I think at one point she even had to call into corporate or something.
