Been trying to track down parts for this eternal project...need an XJ550 Maxim tank?

Anybody holding?! Got leads? Desperate and all 'easy' options out there are way toooooooo pricey for my blood.

    Any tips?

    Jason

Depends on the condition really...my tank is in great exterior shape/no dents...but RUSTED OUT inside, done the acid wash and such but i have had zero progress. So when I see rusty tanks i can't take the risk.

I’m curious- how bad is bad? Holes or just crusty looking? Any idea why stuff you’ve tried to de-rust hasn’t worked?

And of course my usual advice: don’t do anything hasty and throw it away.

If it’s not leaking, you should be able to get it serviceable again. Might take another soak or two and a tumble in the dryer with some aquarium rocks in it.

What exactly have you done so far?

if you have heavy rust you can pour some bb's in the tank and shake them around to knock of the larger scale which can be removed with magnet .
any acid treatment muriatic or viniger is to transform rust but will still leave the scale

electrolisis is also a good way to remove rust

fish tank gravel also removes rust just pack tight in a drier and run on cool cycle

what ever method you use you want to knock as much rust out of tank first bb's or gravel.
    then treat tank
a radiator shop can do this for you

Instead of using fish tank gravel, or BB's, might I suggest flat head wood screws.......... I used #8x3/4.........being magnetic they are easily removed from the tank with a small stick magnet; gravel you will shake for ever; and being sharp they do a good job of de-scaling........I found that my tank did not fit into my dryer.....650 Seca.....so I built a tumbler out of 2x4, 1/2 inch pipe and fittings, 1x12 board, turn it by hand.........I'll try to get some pic's of it up

I have seen where it might be advisable to clamp the power leads to two areas on the tank that are far apart, which I didn't, maybe on the electrode in the fill hole and the other on a screw at the petcock hole. Somehow that might result in better electrical coverage, but not sure.

@JBurch - that's a pretty slick idea. I might have to "borrow" that design.

As far as electrolysis, the power source has always been sort of a pain - getting hard to find a cheap manual battery charger these days. I stumbled upon this article - using a PC power supply. If you're a nerd you probably have one laying around the house. You can get ATX power supplies easily and cheap. I haven't tried it yet, but I have the supplies to build it and will try it this summer for sure.

I used a car battery and connect a charger to it to keep it from discharging.

I hold no patents on the design, nor is it copy rited
