I recently acquired my xj750. I fixed the fuses, drained the old gas, and changed the spark plugs. She starts up fine (and quickly I might add) but then the rpms rev up to about 5K, then settle around 1K for about 5 seconds or so, then it just dies. I haven't cleaned the carbs, could that cause this? Maybe leaky vacuum hose?

Most likely the floats are stuck and you are running out of fuel. Pull the carbs and give them a once-over. Clean and clean some more. Another point is to ensure that the fuel system is in good shape. Examine your fuel lines and fuel filter (assuming you have one). If you don't have an in-line filter, get one installed asap.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on cleaning the carbs tomorrow. But I'm not sure which fuel filter I need. The local Wal-Mart only has two selections. One is a FRAM G2 and the other is a FRAM G3. Will either of these work on my bike?

After a little research I found out the G2 has a 5/16" hose and the G3 has a 3/8" hose. So, I'll get the G2 since it's the closest to the 750 fuel line size, if I'm not mistaken. If anybody knows any different, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I think the fuel line is 1/4".

    Cheers,

I believe Phil is correct. Check your local lawnmower parts place.
