    Greetings fellow part-seeker/sellers!

I'm inching closer and closer to getting this 1981 XJ550 Maxim on the ROAD...Most likely jinxing it by typing that.

In need of a good SEAT option for the old girl; my wrinkle is this

some dumb dumb 'modified' the bar that the seat assembly uses to attach.

Pictured here is NOT my frame, but I'm using it to explain the part that's gone. They've cut it right off. So, i'm pretty sure ANY seat that can be afixed to the frame would work, just don't know what or how to do so? Current 'seat' that came with the bike is a padded wad on a shit wooden plank

    Any tips?

I have a seat from a 82 XJ650. Would that work? I have some photos you can look at.

Looks good. can you shoot a profile of the seat?

and what would you want for it? where in the world are you?

I also have the rear part of the frame.
    Hi, Jason,

I can send a profile shot this Saturday. I live in Manassas, Virginia, USA. Make me an offer and if it's reasonable, you can have it.

    Hey, Jason,
Just to be clear, the pictures I already uploaded don't give you the needed perspective, correct?

so this frame is off of what year/model bike? it's looks super close to my XJ550 Maxim frame, but the previous owners butchered it a bit so i don't know what it's supposed to look like. just have evidence from online pictures.

have you considered mounting a bar to replacate the missing part? ti is used to mount the rubber straps inside the chain box that hold the stock seat.
front of the seat has a tang that slips under the gas tank mount.

if you want a flat seat the seca 550 seat will work and you could add the hindge and lock to the frame.
I have used broom clips to hold a seca seat to a maxim frame. the clips you put on a wall to hold broom.

I will look at how a 650 seat fits on mt maxim 550 over the week end and get you a photo the 650 seat has a latching mechinisim at the rear .
you would have to do some welding to atach brackets for that as well.

do you have a 550 maxim seat?

that is a 650 frame he posted a photo the frame is same for all 4 years you would need to add the pracket and pins for a 650 latch setup

I do NOT have a seat…i have a makeshift bs board with a pad on it that the previous Dr. Frankenstein used… they chopped the bar (i assume) to accommodate this ‘luxury item’

    wow thats quite a seat.
you will need to add that bracket or a cross support back to the frame as it is more that a seat mount it keeps the frame from moving.

there are enough people bobing the 550 maxim you should be able to get someone to give you the part of the frame they cut off with the bracket then weld the bracket back on.

just tried a 650 seat on the 550. the front of the tank interfears with the front hook due to seat hitting tank. seat could be modified to slide in

the seat fits with the grab bar in place but the bracket that was removed would hold rear of seat a little high due to its shape.

    photo to follow

nice. that bracket looks DRASTICALLY different than the ones i've gotten images of (mine was chopped obvi)

my preference is to get a more cafe racer style seat, and i've seen stock seats (like the one Gary Potter posted above)

    this bracket looks super tall.

I put the 650 seat on another 550 frame I had it fit well without the chain box and grab bar.
the wing on the bracket interfears with the seat sitting flush.
the front tang on 650 seat does not slide under fuel tank due to shape of front of seat but could be made to fit.
if you were to get the 650 bracket and weld that on the frame and mod the front of seat a little the 650 seat would work well

Here is the profile of the seat. I have included the part of the frame that it sits on. There is also a "grab bar" that goes together with it.

I have a full nicely upholstered xj550 maxim seat I would sell you cheap

650 seat is much different and sits awkward on a 550 frame

if you go with the 650 set up you only need the bracket section of the 650 frame. that would save you some shipping

Make me an offer. If it's reasonable, you can have it. I also have the frame section it connects to. You could weld it onto your existing frame. I had sent you some pictures not too long ago. Look and see if that would work. Let me know. Gary

Bought it without knowledge of anything. Seat was never on it. Eventually realized they hacked the frame apart.
