I changed my own tires this past winter, seemingly without any problems. However, yesterday, I was checking the tire pressure and I think something got in the valve and the tire went flat. But the bead also slipped off the shoulder. I noticed that these rims do not have the small lip my other bikes have and wonder if anyone else has had this problem? Best I can figure, the tire lube is slick enough that the tight bead skipped off when the pressure dropped. After reseating it (hearing the pop), if I deflated the tires, the bead would slip down into the drop center. Inflate it, and it would seat and hold air.

I'm thinking of installing tubes to prevent anything happening under way.

it should not do that .
when you inflate tire and hear the pop go higher in presure and use a rubber mallet to hit the tire it will help seat the bead if it is not fully seated after the pop
you could also bounce and rotate tire to do the same

Due to the age of the bike it probably doesn't have the safety lip on the wheels to stop the tyre popping off as it deflates, that will happen if it goes flat whether or not it has a tube in it and it may not even be a wheel designed to be run tubeless, if it is it will have the word tubeless cast into it somewhere

Tubeless is better, but there is no problem with running tubes in tubeless tyres

My Maxim is sitting on flat tires and last I looked at it the rear is also off the bead. Not concerned cause that won't happen when it has pressure. If your tire pressure gets to that point while you're underway, tube or no tube you're going to have other shit to worry about. I wouldn't think putting a tube in would do anything as it's in the rim design and not an issue.

That article is specific to car tires. I've never seen tube tires for street bikes. The cast wheels for the xj650r are designed for tubes or not, according to the owner's manual.

I’m going at say that if tire slips of bead it was never seated correctly.

tubes increase the heat build up of tires.
IIRC many euro bikes use tubes in the xj family

    my deflated tires stay seated
    what tires are you using?
are the tires listed as tubeless?

Metzeler Roadtec 01, which can be used with or without tubes. It's possible that it was never fully seated, complicated by the rim design.
