I am new here and have a question..I have a 1986 xj700x with a ribbed generator cover, as it should be, AND a spare Smooth cover. I think that the smooth is from an earlier year. Other than aesthetics, are there any issues with using the smooth ? I figured since the ribs dissipate heat faster, there might have been a problem.
    Thanks in advance..

Keep the finned cover on her, unless she's cracked. Running the smooth cover is not going to cause any problems, but it won't look right.

Also please keep the questions about any issues with your machine in one thread. The history of what has (and has not) been done is an important part of providing you with good service.

No issue with ribbed or smooth. I swapped my original smooth XJ650 cover with a ribbed version from an XJ750P as I think it looks better

The smooth covers are not deep enough to use with the wider 26A alternator as used on the X models. The swap "the other way".....as Mezzmo did.....will work fine, but you can't do a ribbed-to-smooth conversion on a X engine unless you fabricate a (about 3mm, if I recall correctly) thick spacer.

Thank You for the input. I thought that zi would put the smooth on while I cleaned and painted the ribbed.....but, if it won't fit..decision made.
