Hi all picked up a 650 yesterday and its a project for sure, i wanted to see if this thing would start after sitting 21 years, gas in tank was clean no rust smelt bad though... i decide to pull the carb tops and remove the pistons and needle jet, had to prize up the pistons stuck with varnish, the needle jet came out of the piston.
refitting the needle jet does the jet push all the way through the plastic holder all the way or is it flush with the top of the p holder... would like to see if it starts before pulling the carbs

It looks right, the needle goes into the slide and is held with a spring and plastic bolt. Check my video as it might help.

Thanks Mezzmo decided to pull the carbs...my carbs have been rebuilt before so pulling apart i noticed the bowl gaskets in good shape main and pilot plugged up plus one air bleed up top, float bowl tiny hole plugged fuel for choke.. so i dont need rebuild kit, just clean the jets... throttle end shaft tapered seals look in good shape, must have been replaced at some time so i dont need to split the carbs...

The plastic cap should be pushed fully down until it sets on the "ledge" near the top of the needle. The two pictures you have posted show an incorrect positioning of the plastic cap. The ends of the needles got seized in the emulsion tube, and when prying the vac diaphrams up, the needle started pulling out of the cap until the seizure was finally broken.......

I see the lip on the needle so the needle needs to be pushed through the plastic cap until it buts up against the needle ledge..makes cense chacal, picture of the carb kit shows the same picture needle and cap position ..Thanks for pointing that out ...Mezzmo said i had it correct??

Sorry, I thought you were asking how it fits into the slide. Chacal is right, that plastic piece needs to be pushed down onto the ledge of the needle. Didn’t notice that earlier…
