    Hi everyone,

Getting my XJ550 going again I have had to do some work freeing up my carbs, but find they I have two complete sets of perforated diaphragms. I keep missing out on ebay auctions, but see that FZ600 ones are a little more common - or earlier XJ600 ones as well. I know Diversion ones are different, but has anyone fitted 600 carbs ? Are they a straight fit ? Would they need rejetting ?(I have a Motad 4-1 fitted.)

    Thanx

You can check if the part numbers match by going to Yamaha's online parts catalog and enterting type of product, model and year. Then you'll get a page with different parts folders. Click on them to bring up a diagram of each part and a small window below has a list of the part numbers. Go to:

The carbs of the XJ600(pre diversion) do fit the 650 not sure about the 550, if they do i`m pretty sure they will need rejetting.

You could try this place for diaphrams, a friend used them and was please with the work and the saving over yamaha prices.

Thanks, that's a lot cheaper - I'll save a few pennies and go for the diaphragms.

I need to check the various CDs I've got hanging around to see if I can still check the parts number first, though, but I expect that there would be a different part number even if there were only small changes to the jetting and the carbs were still compatible.

Well as I've still been saving my pennies, I've also been looking out for ebay bargains, but I keep losing out right at the end as I'm not usually around when the bidding closes and I can never bring myself to put a really high bid on it and leave it. (Or rather it seems high when I bid, but seeing that it went afterwards for £1 more - duh)

Either way, I've been keeping an eye on this guy in Germany who does diaphragms, but he's also doing carb refurbishment kits. It looks like a very good price. This is for a set of all the jets and gaskets (except needle and slide) for an XJ650 for abou £65.

    Web Page Name

If he has them for my XTZ660 I might order some to try them out - or has anyone else any experience of these kits ?

I read in another thread on this site that perforated diaphragms can be repaired with "plasti-dip" some liquid rubber you dip tool handles in.
There's also something called "liquid electrical tape".
This could get you up and riding until you get your new parts.

Thanks for the tip, I've placed an order and I'll let everyone know how it goes.

I've also ordered an aerosol to see if it will refurbish a perished sidecar cover .....
