I'm new here but a long time lurker. When I put my 81 650 maxim up for the winter, I noticed oil leaking from the area of the oil filter cover as It was parked and I was running the gas out of the carbs.

I figured the O rings were old so I replaced them today with the oil change I just did. It is still leaking. Seems to be the larger O ring where the housing meets the frame.

Any Suggestions? Should I let it sit and see if the O ring expands a bit? Maybe the engine is not hot enough at idle or something like that?

I previously had a small leak from the tach gear seal, but that has been fixed and not leaking now.

probably time for a new large o-ring. And, change the oil at the same time. Most likely, the o-ring has hardened up. It can also just get flat-spotted. I have some that I've pulled off, they feel nice and soft, but were flat. I've keep them in a bag, and after about 5 years or so, they are nice and round again. So, I reuse them when they round-out again, and I've not had any problems.

Take the filter cover back off and inspect both it and the housing for nicks and cracks. If the filter bolt is overtightened it can potentially distort the cover.

Also make sure the little tab is lined up BETWEEN fins on the engine, not ON a fin----

Thank you for the replies. I took it back off, wiped everything down and put it back on. No more leak. Had a good ride yesterday as it was really our first weekend of decent weather. Today is supposed to be even better.:D

Shotar, Do you happen to remember what size o-ring you used for a replacement on the oil filter cover? I have a leak in the same place but can't seem to find a spec on this o-ring.

Per Bigfitz52 - The FRAM pn CH6003 oil filter comes with both O-rings, should be able to find locally. Or email Len Chacal at info@xj4ever.com for the absolute best service and parts on these bikes to purchase them separately along with any other parts you may need.

Every filter I have bought had two new o rings. One for housing, one for bolt.

I appreciate the quick response k-moe, but there isn't any sizes in this thread. I am looking for the actual size of those o rings. If you or anyone would know, I would appreciate it.

I buy the Fram CH6003 and replace the o-rings every time the oil gets changed. Buy a new Fram filter, get the o-rings, measure them and you can then buy a bunch of them so that instead of changing the filter you can swap out o-rings . . . .

Ok, that was kinda assy, but meant to be funny, don't take it personally.
Filters aren't that expensive, buy a new one (I think the CH6003 from Fram is the only one that comes with o-rings). Trust me, I am cheaper than cheap and so broke that I can't even pay attention. Buy the right filter and as a bonus you get the correct sized o-rings.

That's where I went wrong, I bought some on Amazon and assumed they would come with them but didn't.

Just here to confirm that I also made the mistake of using the O’rings provided with the Fram filter. Both (the one for the bolt, and the one for the filter housing) are observably too small. I’ve had oil dribbling since then, despite making absolutely sure everything was correctly installed.
