Can someone clarify this? makes no sense to me. Its talking about the Pilot fuel jet right? not air jet. 2.5 turns would be the air/fuel mix screw ya? not pilot screw? only the fuel/air mix screw has the O-ring. Wish the video that was made backed off to show where they were spraying carb cleaner.

    Thanks all.

To make sure that your internal pilot fuel circuit is truly “zestfully clean” after your clearing efforts:

    1. Drill out an old pilot fuel jet so that the straw from the carb cleaner fits snuggly in the hole (or some other suitable method of “sealing off” a straw into the pilot fuel jet passage where the jet screws into the carb body).
    2. Leave the pilot air jet in, but block it off with a wooden q-tip that is covered with a bit of heat shrink tubing (or use your finger to firmly block it off).
    3. Install the pilot screw without its o-ring, and set it to about 2.5 turns out from soft bottoming.
    4. Blast the carb cleaner through the modified pilot jet and it should look something like this:

I think "air/fuel mix screw" and "pilot screw" are used interchangeably. Full name/description should probably be something like: "Fuel/air mixture adjustment screw for the pilot circuit".

Shoot the cleaner into the pilot fuel jet (or modified pilot jet) located in the float bowl. The idea for modifying an old jet is so that the straw from a can of carb cleaner fits snugly.

The pilot air jet needs to be blocked off otherwise that is the path of least resistance and the cleaner will just shoot out the top.

The test is supposed to ensure that fuel has a clean and clear path from the float bowl to that tiny hole into the intake stream on the intake side of the butterfly.

    Does that help?

Yes thanks. Dunno why they mentioned the fuel/air screw unless its just to get carb cleaner in thee to clean it out also.

I guess technically the pilot fuel/air mixture adjustment screw is part of the pilot circuit, so you want to include it in the test to make sure fuel can flow properly. I'm also guessing that the instructions say to not include the tiny o-ring so that the carb cleaner solvents don't attack the soft material.

For anyone playing along at home and wondering what and where these things are, what they are supposed to do, any why they are a bit of a bear to get clean, this is a good resource:

Adding this pic to this thread cause when I followed the procedure, I found that one of the 2 additional holes that expose themselves as you move the throttle plate was clogged on 2 of the 4 carbs.
You can just jam the throttle plate open with something soft like a wood dowel or strip of plastic to make it easier.
you can see the 2nd and 3rd holes in this pic below the main hole depicted in the video linked on the xj4ever page.
