Side stand and ignition relay question.

    Hey there… 82 xj750 maxim relays. Both my relays had gone bad and I wrongfully assumed any relay that fit would work. So now the question is this. Does anyone know how to wire in a “normally closed” relay and what kind I could use to replace the older ones? Spending $100 on a single new or taking a chance on an eBay used relay is my last resort. I just don’t know if I would need a 5 pin/4 pin NC relay specifically or how to wire in said relays. Thanks in advance

    There are people with electrical wizardry and knowledge of these electrical systems of these bikes that can probably help with some troubleshooting and making sure you've got the right relays in the right spots, things like that.

    But if push comes to shove, I would suggest posting a "wanted" thread in the "For Sale/Trade/Wanted" forum. I suspect there are plenty of unused relays sitting around out there. I may even have some.

    First just make sure you have the correct relays in the correct position. Sidestand relay should have a blue paint dot. Headlight relay has yellow paint dot.

    Sympathize with ebay as a last resort, but I was able to pick up a good, tested side stand relay for $20. There are normally closed relays on Amazon for <$10 but you would have to splice in its connector.

    Normally open closes the circuit when power is applied, normally closed breaks the circuit when applied.

    On my XJ650 there is a white wire to the headlight relay from the alternator that activates the relay and sends power (blue/green wire, I think) to the hi/lo selector switch. With the ss relay it opens the relay when the circuit is broken by the side stand switch. Check the wiring diagram, there is 12v hot in + 12v hot out with a ground and the sidestand wire activating the relay.

    I believe the sidestand relay is a closed circuit and needs power to open it. The cutoff relay is an open circuit that needs to be closed

    I read somewhere about using a 5 pin NC automotive relay but I just need to figure out which wiring needs to be on which pin

    What does that side stand relay switch affect anyways? I’m guessing engages kill switch but what else?

    If the side stand relay is closed (it's normal state) and the transmission is not in neutral, it will ground out the TCI. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if the neutral relay is normally open or normally closed. This is all from memory, but with the rectangle / blue dot on top, the left hand side of the stock relay is the power side and the right side is the switch side. So of course on the connector that would be opposite. Don't have time to look in my Haynes right now for wire colors, but somebody else can chime in.

    The difference with a five-pin automotive is that you have the option for normally open and normally closed right there. You would have to look at the diagram with the actual relay to know how.

    The diagrams there show the wire color and required function of each pin if you want to modify the harness to replace the stock relays. It is fairly easy with the sidestand relay using the closed contacts of a SPDT relay or the NC contacts of a SPST relay, just be sure to choose an automotive relay that meets the reliability requirements - meaning be careful with Amazon.

    The starter cutoff relay with the internal diode is more complicated and I don't think there is a plug in aftermarket replacement available. The diode could be added externally, but I think the general consensus is most are not going to bother rewiring a connector and adding a diode when stock replacements are available

    Yeah, I was away for a couple days hence my lack of response. I did however, utilize an automotive 5 pin relay. I just had to make sure which posts had the coil between and which didn’t based on a continuity test. Now it’s just cleaning things up and working on the suspension and brakes lol

    Thank you all for the help in this portion. I was really getting frustrated because I do know a bit about electronics but it never even stupidly dawned on me about an NC relay lol. But seriously, I thank you guys. Your diagrams and advice were definitely incremental in getting her running. I’m sure I’ll have more questions soon so I hope the hardest part is over for now
