Get yourself a voltage meter. You sould get around 13 to 14 volts when you rase the RPMs above 2000. Check at the battery. If not ,check your alternater brushes.

hey I know it’s 15 years too late, but I’m having the same issue. Did you ever solve? I have v meter and all reads status quo. Replaced alternator brushes. No difference. Just replaced voltage regulator and it killed headlight and brake lights so I undid that. Love it if there was some ‘hey here’s the fox’ issue out there.

Does your headlight come back up bright when then engine speed increases? All these XJ's let the headlight dim at idle or low engine speed. As stated above as long as the voltage at the battery terminals comes back up and the lights brighten as engine speed increases all is well.
