    Hi all,

Firstly I would like to introduce myself.

I live in the UK, and have just purchased an xj650 maxim, 1981. (US import)

I bought it as a non-runner with clogged carbs and starter problem - turned out to be seized solid on 1 cylinder.

(Well, I wanted a winter project!)

Here's the question, I plan to re-lap the valves whilst I wait for new pistons to arrive for rebore and have no way of knowing how good the valve stem oil seals are, so I plan to replace them.

The seals I have seen for sale state UK model only - is there a difference in oil seals between UK & US models, or are the suppliers just being awkward?

Buying from a UK supplier saves on shipping costs.

Your knowledge would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Karl

Hi Karl, great to see a new UK member.

I use Fowlers Parts in the UK, they are very helpful. If you call on 0117 977 0466 and give them the engine number, they will answer your question.

I've spoken to Fowlers and given the engine number, they will be able to confirm if the UK & US models share the same valve stem oil seals and more importantly, part #'s.

This information is only available on their microfiche not on the website part lists. Their price is per unit, not for a set of 8.

Found this parts list on CMS, SEAL, VALVE STEM OIL for XJ650 MAXIM 1981 (B) USA - order at CMSNL the part # is 1J7-12119-01 which seems to be the same across the XJ650 model range.

    I have a 1980 XJ650 (UK) which shares the same part #.

The Yambits ones,Yambits : for Yamaha bikes
    Replaces Yamaha part numbers
    OEM Part number: 1J7-12119-01
    OEM Part number: 1L9-12119-00
    Currently Out of Stock

Wow guys, really helpful, I'll give Wemoto a go, used them in the past and they are OK.
I can't believe yamaha would use different seals for UK and US.

the same problem has surfaced for engine gasket sets, some list sets for XJ's, others state uk models!!!!

They're all the same! Gasket SETS differ between years on the 650's due to the YICS vs. non-YICS engines, they use different head gaskets, different valvecover gaskets, etc.
