Where can I get a whole shim set? Also does "YICS Eliminator" still exist?

    I hopefully can use it. Situation is I have an '82 XJ650, and the guy who gave it to me has two '82 550s. Assuming they take the same shims, was thinking it makes sense to just get a whole kit between us, would save down time when adjusting, and being as currently my bike is my only transpo.

    If they don't take thwe same shims, I'd still be interested in a source for both kits?

    Anyway I have not found any place selling whole sets for this bike. Perhaps there's some other model uses same size? Anyway if it can be had for under $100, I'm down for just having a whole set to avoid issue when doing maintenance.

    Also, as mentioned in the title, I find lots of info about making temporary YICS tools, but I'm more interested in the "YICS Eliminator" concept, a device that could be used to sync carbs then removed, or left in place. I see much reference to it, but any link to acquiring one is long dead. Will I have to just make my own, or does anyone still make them, or per chance have one they no longer need?

    Right now my bike is barely roadworthy, carbs so bad outta sync it idles really high when warm. Definitely needs TLC< but I need the tools to give it TLC and so far, my searches have been fruitless.

    Thanks.

    You can get shiny new shims from @chacal / xj4ever.com (check upper right corner of this page).

    @hogfiddles runs a shim pool.

    while I agree that it would be nice to have a set, it seems a little extra.

    There is also plenty of debate whether the yics is needed to sync. I’m not going to tell you that it is or isn’t. But if you want one to run permanently, I’m sure @chacal can hook you up.

    Actually, no he can't! We do not offer that gadget, although I think there are some being sold on eBay. Question is, after a few years in there, the rubber will have melted and good luck getting that tool out, should you ever want to...........

    Sorry Len, thought that was something you had.

    given the debate over whether or not the YICS tool is needed for synchronization, what are the thoughts on whether it should be blocked off permanently??

    Save your money on a shim kit, you'll most likely end up with a ton that you don't need and might not even end up with what you need. Do the 550's run? Same shims, measure them and yours and you may end up where you need to be. Do not turn the engine over without a shim in the bucket or it will tear the cam lobe up. Use the money saved to buy a set of gauges to sync up or make a cheap homemade setup. No need to block off the YICS passage for syncing or permanently. Out of sync is out of sync either way.

    You are close to me, I have a lot of shims. The shims are the same that are used on the Z1900 and other bikes. I agree the kit would be a waste of money. If you want new take a look on e bay. Retro-motorcycle has shims if you want new and he is in Seattle. Otherwise check you measurements and what shims are currently in your bike. I could probably supply what you need for a few bucks
