Hello, I am new to motorcycle and ended up buying a 1982 Yamaha xj1100, cylinder 1 and 4 isn’t firing. So far I’ve tested the coil by plugging it into the other side (it sparks when you do that) and testing the orange and red and white wire (both have power with key on), also I’ve tested the orange wire back by the igniter module and I get power plus when I crank it pulses. Can anyone help me on what to test next I’m fair confident the icm and the coils fine but idk how to go about testing the pickup coil.

I do not have a Haynes manual for it, would I be able to search up the resistances, also I can get the resistances when I get home and I’ll post them

To me, the igniter unit would be more likely to fail than the pick up coils.

Given, it is hard to test if you don’t have a spare laying around

Is that moving the coil with the orange wire to the harness with the grey wire?

And you get pulses on the grey wire also? Using a DMM or analog meter?

    "XJ1100 models:

    Pick-up coils:
    120 ohms +/- 20% = 96 ohms to 144 ohms acceptable range

    Ignition Coils:

Primary side (input from main wiring harness):
    2.5 ohms +/- 10% = 2.25 ohms - 2.75 ohms acceptable range

Secondary side (spark plug wires, without their end caps):
    11K ohms +/- 20% = 8,800 ohms - 13,200 ohms acceptable range

    Spark plug caps:
    5K +/- 20% = 4,000 to 6,000 ohms per cap acceptable range"

    Spark plugs:
    0 ohms per plug

To add to the confusion the non resister spark plugs are becoming obsolete, so if needing new caps best to check availability of spark plugs and consider going for non resistive caps

If you have some spare time this poster would love some help from a XJ1100 owner to give him confidence on coil mounting

@Rooster53 - when diagnosing this sort of issue, how common is it that the pickup coils fail? The list of failures that I have experienced on 650s and 750s is getting smaller, but pickup coil failure is on that list.

The bike actually came with new pickup coils that I installed.

    ^^^^ ?

I am thinking very rare, at least that's my take after reading posts on the site for a good number of years. The only one I really recall failed hot
