No you just need a new start button. Do a search here and you will find that arizonasteve makes new ones which you can order. If you can cross the solenoid and start the bike then the solenoid is good.

you could check to see if there's voltage (12V) going to the solenoid trigger terminals (the smaller ones) when you short the start button. If there is, but the solenoid does not engage, that's most likely a dead solenoid.

Crossing the big terminals on the solenoid effectively bypasses it, so that's not really an indication of a working unit.

But yes, do yourself a favor and get a replacement start button :)

Yep, that is the test for the starter to turn so that you know the button, starter, relay and battery are good. Leaves the solenoid as the bad component. I should have just gone to bed instead of getting online!

Are you saying the starter button itself is missing? If so, you've got to get that fixed first before condemning other parts.

Between you and me, if the oil light is coming on, that means the switch is grounding properly. I'm betting you're not getting any power to the solenoid from the Starter Circuit Cut-Off Relay. You can test this but first you'll need to make sure the bike is in neutral, on the center stand, the ignition switch turned on, and the kill switch turned on.

Find and unplug the pigtail going to the starter solenoid. Hook your voltmeter to the Red/White wire coming from the bike (not the solenoid) and ground. Squeeze the clutch lever and see if you get 12+ volts showing on the meter.

If you do, the starter switch is probably toast. If not, you need to look at the Starter Circuit Cut-Off Relay and it's various components. I've written an indepth How-To that will step you through the process of testing.
