I'm looking for a new speedo/tachomoter cluster for an 80 xj650, will an 81 cluster work?

    Yes, 80 and 81 Maxims use the same instruments. Specifically, they both have mechanically driven tachometers.

    In 1982 the 650 Maxim got a YICS engine and an electronic tach, so 82 and later will NOT work.

    The speedo from an 82 cluster will work and will fit in an 80/81 cluster though. FYI if you are looking at components vs. the whole cluster.

    appreciate the info! I did only need the speedometer, I guess I tightened it too much when I reattached the cable to it and it tore the metal apart inside of it?! that little half sphere in the bottom of the speedo side broke into like 5 pieces
