Just got into a community shop to work on my bikes.

Memorial day weekend bought an 82 XJ 650 maxim with Yics. Ran fantastic when I was riding it, even after the previous owner had it sitting for a year or two. It was his sons, so he wasn't sure if the carbs were messed with at all. I pulled the tires off, got a shop to change those. After I first pulled the carbs, it started idling at 4k. I could knock it down to 2k, anything lower it dies pretty quick. Just had the carbs off and swapped out a majority of jets. Sonic bathed them and got even the small passages in the bottom of the bowls. I have it bench synched, but it still revs high up to 2k after getting warm. Checking the shims shortly.

Have an 81 maxim too. Bought it pretty chopped up and haven't been able to work on it since last September. Once the 82 is good, going to be bringing it in to finish up. Stripped the airbox and working with the forum favorite pods.

Did you replace the throttle shaft seals?

Don't worry about shaft seals until you've done valve clearances then vacuum synched. Bench synching is a subjective thing, in that one person might get it very close one day, but miles out another. Using the plate next to hole method is best imho.
If you can't attain a consistent vacuum synch/idle speed then you need to look at throttle seals.
