Coil availability?

    Has anyone ever tried running an automotive coil (from a car with a DIS ignition system) and ballast resistors?

    I was just wondering if this had ever been done. Some of the factory GM coils are quite cheap and available in the local JYs.

    Since the TCI only has 2 outputs you'd have to run 2 coils on each output. The coils would have to be 5 OHM if wired in parallel or 1.25 OHM if wired in series.

    An interesting idea.

    Also, after looking at the electrical diagram I see no reason why you couldn't use a coil/coil combo with more than 2.5 OHM resistance. I'd worry about less putting too much juice through the TCI.

    Oh, another thought. I don't suppose it would be an issue, but GM doesn't fire their coils 9000 times/minute.

    EDIT: Wiring in series won't work. That'd have the coils running at 6V.

    why not just run a DIS type coil. They have ford 4 post coils, GM 4 post coils, and GM 2 post coils. All I'll need to do is get a pigtail and connector and wire in a 2-3 ohm high watt resistor per each input to the coil(s).


    I dunno, just a thoght.


    Not sure if the coil(s) would have a problem keeping up at 9k rpms. But for the cost of parts, it might be worth a try.

    Not that I'm a wiring genius by any means, but I can't see the RPM's being a huge issue. I have on numerous occasions used stock GM HEI coils (mid 70's technology) on racing applications with sustained 7000 rpm use. I am sure that most of our bikes don't see continuous runs at 9000 RPM very often. More often quick hig rev spikes before a shift, etc.

    I do however, with the plentiful supply of motorcycle salvage yards, question whether the work is really beneficial as a cost cutting method. Interesting thought though. I would be interested to see it set up with the distributorless style as installed creatively, it would look quite trick!

    at 9000 rpm your coils are firing 18000 times a minute

    bump.
    a grand is bunch of $$, but an increase in economy ad performance would eventually pay for itself. Cheaper/easier to obtain GM coils is another huge plus.
