83 Maxim XJ750. Sounds like a cylinder is misfiring on idle, won't hold idle and it just slowly peters out. When it's running, it feels like it's having trouble accelerating, but sounds better at higher speeds. We checked the plugs, they have a compression between 110 and 120, all 4 plugs are dry and have no issue sparking. Took the carbs out, cleaned them out completely with brake cleaner. Cleaned out the emulsion tubes and all. Bowls are getting gas. Both me and my mechanic are running out of ideas on what the issue could be.

I have a similar issue. I've decided to replace the coils with the cheapest aftermarket coil that XJBikes has for sale. I'll let you know how that works out.

Was it running fine, then this problem started suddenly?

Were the carbs completely disassembled for cleaning, including the pilot screws? Pilot jets removed and cleaned?

When it does start, is this with the choke on? Then won't idle with the choke off?

Can you isolate the misfire cylinder(s) at idle by comparing exhaust temperatures as they exit the head?
