so i just got this 83 yamaha maxim 750, ran great, took it out yesterday in the heat and when i came back so it was low on oil, took a little over a quart, went to start it this morning and it started right up as usual but when i went to shift into first the bike just did a little jump and died, tried rocking it forward and back, tried to start in second, nothing, i think the clutch plates may have fussed? How can i fix this? Someone else said to check diode block by unplugging and if it goes then it's bad and replace that part, any advice, i really need some help

What happens when you pull the clutch lever?

Can you shift gears at all?

Does it turn over at all?

Check the safety switch on the side stand (unless it was down when going thru your issue, lol)

Diode block? What's that got to do with your clutch?
Anyway, I've had this issue because the clutch had been left dry. What I did was tighten the hanlebar adjustment right up, try rocking it with the lever in all the way. Mine didn't release, so I parked against a wall, engine running, clutch in, bang it in 1st. Mine released. If it doesn't release the engine will die, no issues. If it does release take it for a spin, then adjust it when hot.

Yes more likely ignition cutoff due to side stand safety system. I doubt it's the clutch.

Well dose it move in gear if you push it with the clutch lever in? Simple enough check.

I'm betting side stand too. I can't recall why the side stand was not all the way up but I had move the kick stand and don't think it went all the way up and put into gear, then shut off. looked down and kick stand was not all the way up. Put it on center stand to investigate and just letting the spring finish the job did not pull stand all the way up.
I had moved it back and forth then it was fine. That reminds me that I need to look at that again before it stops me from getting home one day.
It would not hurt for me to make sure I have jumpers or such to bypass some things in case I need to get home. I know the info to bypass the safety switches are here somewhere, I just did not write it down. I need to do that and put stuff in a zip lock with instructions into my tool back. You know, if I don't do this, it will happen. But if I prep for it, it will never happen.

Shouldn't really need jumpers, just be sure you know where the B/W bullet connector is off the TCI. Unplugging that B/W bullet connector will disable the ignition cutoff. That takes care of the ignition cutoff; as for the starter just be sure you have the two options with a working clutch switch. That way if the neutral switch decided not to cooperate you could go to plan B and pull the clutch lever in and put the side stand up to engage the starter
