So I recently acquired an '82 Seca 650 that had been sat for many years, I saved it from the scrapyard and has now become my project. I worked through all the electrics to get it all working, took the cylinder head off to find 1 rusty cylinder and cleaned it out so that I could crank it by hand. Reassembled and compression tested, all cylinders were very low (25-75 psi, sheeeesh...).

So with that in mind I'm trying desperately to find a new engine for it. I could do the piston rings but i'm not 100% sure that would restore full compression. I did do a leak down test of the valves when the head was off and they was fine for the purposes of getting it running. In any case I'm having trouble finding parts for it, and the parts I can find are outrageously priced. So I thought I'd ask the most experienced group I know of for guidance!

    To sum up:
*Does anyone have/know where I might be able to find an engine for an '82 Seca 650?
    *What's everyones recommended parts source?
*Does it have to be a 650 engine, or could I potentially fit a 550/750 engine to it (with appropriate carbs of course).
*As a side note I'm Vancouver, B.C. (which might be why it's so hard to find parts/engines)

Help me save the old gal! 364211847_1695109190936417_3640058903728051287_n.jpg TIA!

I’ve got a couple engines, not in the bike. I think they both were showing low compression on one cylinder but turn over no problem. I’m in Nova Scotia so the shipping would be a killer. If your ever on this end of the country your welcome to one of them.

    Check with @Toomanybikes

but any xj650 engine will swap—maxim or seca, YICS or non-YICS ( May have some slight mods to do), and also any 750 seca or maxim.

check out the engine swap section of the information overload hour.

550 wont work unless you have gobs of money to throw at your bike to convert to a smaller engine with less power and chain drive.

If you swap in a Maxim engine (650 or 750) don't get rid of your old engine right away. You'll have to swap over the gear shift lever and side cover (easy swap). Possibly a few other parts too, like engine mounts.
I'm in Victoria and have a few extra 650 Seca parts, but not a complete engine. As Hogfiddles mentioned, @Toomanybikes is your best bet. He's in Tsawwassen.

    * when putting an XJ750 engine into a 1982 650RJ Seca frame, please observe the following changes:

    - have to convert tachometer to an electrically driven version.
    - the original XJ650RJ oil level sender needs to be retained (unless the engine is from a 1983 750 Maxim or Midnight Maxim)
    - the 650RJ shifter side cover and all internal components are the same as those in a XJ750 Seca engine. The 750 Maxim style shifter may not work.
    - all engine mounting hardware for the XJ750 Maxim engine will need to be used (no rubbers on Seca engines; an XJ750 Seca engine uses the same mounting hardware as the XJ650RJ Seca, except for the front upper frame brackets, the XJ650RJ Seca frame brackets should be used. If using an XJ750 Maxim engine, you'll need to be creative.............
    - will need to use the XJ650 airbox boots.
    - will need to use XJ750 carbs (or re-establish the XJ650 carbs to XJ750 specs).
    - need to retain the XJ650RJ exhaust system
    - need to retain the XJ650RJ wiring harness, except for the pick-up coils sub-harness. The pick-up coils on the XJ750 engines are different. Need to use the 750 TCI box.
    - when using an XJ750 engine, be aware that there is a slight gearing difference----while both the XJ650RJ Seca and the XJ750 Seca models used a 18" rear wheel, the XJ750 Maxim models used only a 16" rear wheel, and thus the middle drive gear ratios are slightly different inside the tranny on some engines. Thus there will be a difference in the acceleration of the bike, depending on which donor engine is used.

I do have a spare 650 seca motor if you are still looking complete but for the clutch cover
I can do a compression test also
Ps it is a later yics motor but is compatible

You could just look for a barrel and piston set?

Try squirting acetone 50/50 with ATF into the plug holes. the rings often get stuck on bikes that have sat for a while
