Master cyclinder and front brake to me. The master still has fluid in it.

Question is, should I leave fluid in the cylinder to keep seal moist while im storing it.

Or did they just ship it that way?

shouldn't hurt anything if you're not storing it for long... but brake fluid degrades over time.

if you're shelving it for a long time, i'd drain it and put a drop of some light oil in it, like 3-in-1... just enough to wet the rubber parts.

I had heard that the rubbers in brakes could swell up if exposed to oil. It could be an old wives' tale of course, but I've always kept oil away from brake parts and so can't say what effect it would actually have.
[I've used that red rubber grease to lubricate the piston/seals etc]

Thanks for the replies guys...I think it will be stored for a long while, so this is what I was wondering. What is the best storing method.

NO oil It WILL destroy the rubbers/seals

Please do not put oil in it.

    That is an absolute no-no!!

Just leave the brake fluid in. After all, it lives in there all the time.

    I apologize, I should've been more specific --

3-in-1 silicone lubricant is perfectly safe for rubber.

also, have you ever taken apart a master cylinder that's been sitting full of brake fluid for a good long while?... Brake fluid turns into sludge overtime, especially if it's been exposed to high humidity.

hey Ridez how are you doing? hopefully we can get together this year and put a few miles on a couple pieces of old iron.
I would drain because you dont know how much moisture is in brakefluid,if going to store for indefinate amount of time I would refill with new brake fluid (actually I probly wouldnt but would think about refilling occasainally LOL ) I DEFINATLY WOULD NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT NEW,FRESH,CLEAN,BRAKEFLUID IN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take Care and keep rubber side down.

Hey Rob good hearing from you, I was down in your area a couple of times last year.

Love to get together for a ride! That would make 3 of us then.

Guy down the street rides a yammy too. We ride quite a bit, well thanks for the info.
