My tank was previously lined with Kreem and it’s been flaking off.

Has anyone successfully removed this from their tank? I removed a couple blobs from the exterior of the tank using acetone, but it took a lot of scrubbing.

The internet seems to recommend: mek, acetone, shaking around drywall screws, etc. Some even recommend cutting the tank open and sandblasting :(

Just wondering what the most effective method is.

    Thanks!

I've done it with acetone and screws. Lots of soaking time. Lots of shaking. Real pain the rear.

I would be curious to try MEK.

Kreem lasted 30 years in my tank and then started to flake a bit. Acetone works with patience of letting it soak, but the MEK (deadly stuff) would soften it much quicker. It was still a PIA to get it all out as in the end there were small bits that would dry and get sticky before I could flush them out. It has been a while, but I seem to recall the initial soak was with the MEK that got most of it, and then switching to Acetone as the Kreem was wounded at that point and would let go easier

And, kudos to the original Yamaha paint as I managed to get both MEK and Acetone all over it and it didn't stain it all, although I would still recommend trying not to repeat that as you may not be so lucky

This is what I used, purchased from Ace Hardware in 2104 so not sure they still carry it. I think actual MEK has been discontinued for sale in most states

Thanks guys. I bought a gallon of acetone today and I’ll see if I can find some Mek or similar.

after soaking with the solvent, put a load of screws and bolts inside , replace cap and wrap the tank in blankets etc. then put it in a cement mixer or a tumble drier (without heat) then let it rotate for a while, keep a check on it, see how it goes , much easier than shaking :)

I have used Red Coat with good results it is thin and you can stain it out and back into container and use excess again . Some have reported good results with Caswell .
