Anyone know if you can throw a Virago 750 motor into a 500 frame?

You mean into a Virago 535 frame?

    "Throw?" No.

Could it be done with a whole lot of major modifications? Maybe.

I betcha i could "throw" it in there. You might not like the way the engine looks afterwards though. 8O

When a Bike gets made; a fixed amount of fun gets added-in with everything else that comes-along with the machine.

When they were building Viago's; very few got a whole measure of fun.

I'll bet, ... that if you could have access to the actual numbers, ... outside of the A.M.F. Harley, ... the Yamaha Virago would be one bike that most owners deliberately crashed as a way to get their money back.

Most Yamaha bikes had "START" embossed on the Start Button.
    Virago's had "PUSH TO START".
    It was no lie.

You can throw it into the frame no problem lol but it wont bolt up. 700 750 920 1000 1100 will interchange but on the larger motors you have to change the upper mount. Virago uses the motor as part of the frame. 500 and 535 are all by them selves.

Haha, I totally agree with the PUSH to start! Had to do it a couple times already and it's not even my bike! Fitz, it is in fact an '83 Virago 500, the only year they made them as far as I know. Thanks for the help guys. My buddy bashed up his Virago earlier in the summer and we're looking at a couple Virago 750s for parts to fix it up and we were thinking that we might be able to bump up the engine size but I was pretty sure they wouldn't bolt up.

I feel like there's nothing wrong with a good virago! The 750 is very nice, the amount of power is enough to have some fun if you ask me. "Throw" on a set of pipes and it'll sound real clean! :) Although, the only regret I've heard from owners of 750 Virago's is that they didn't get the 1100. :p

I realize this is an old thread but I find myself with a 1983 500 Virago that's in great shape except that the crankshaft is bent. Other than treating sorry the motor and replacing the crankshaft, can I somewhat easily replace the motor with one out of a 535 Virago? If so, what years would work? Or, does anyone here want to buy a 500 Virago? IMG_20240425_151417614~2.jpg

What do you mean the crankshaft is bent?
    Who diagnosed that?

I did. When you hit the starter you can visually tell that it isn't straight by looking at how the rotor/flywheel wobbles. This led to the stator cover cracking. It may have been caused by backfiring because it was turning over/running fine before that. I tried a different rotor but it also wobbles. Got frustrated and tried percussive maintenance with a hammer and 2x4 but it didn't help.

ebay is a great place for a new used motor. Unless you want to take the time to brake it all the way down. You intend on keeping or flipping the bike? That would help me chose between the time it would take to rebuild the current engine or just find another good used one.

Nice looking bike for sure, someone loved it and took good care of it.

Thank y'all for the suggestions. Turned out I didn't have the woodruff key installed correctly. I filled t down the factory part a little so that the rotor went on more easily, no more wobble. Back carb was still flooding so I sold it and got my son a 550 Seca instead.

The only reason I had it was because a guy gave me the 500 Virago for getting his 1000 Virago running...
