Throttle issues with XJ550 4V8 27A (videos included!)

Hi everyone.

I have some issues with my throttle on my XJ550 4V8 -1983

When I use the throttle its quite stiff and also the play is quite big. There is not way for me to accelerate all the way with out letting go of the handle and take a new grip, just to get to the last 20% of the throttle.

The first video (see my second post) shows how the whole throttle cable kind of moves. This is only happening when I "push" the handle forward, but it seems like something is strange? There is a kind of a "washer" that I think is supposed to be attached to the wire, but has come loose. This makes the whole cable going up and down. But I'm not sure. See the attached picture for the "washer I'm referring to).

The second video (also again, see the second post) is showing how the throttle is quite hard to use, you have to use quite some power and it just feels like it should be more easier to move. Can it be that it just worn out and needs to be changed?

Any suggestions?

The steel tube should not be pulled into the switch housing when you open the throttle. Missing washer or wrong cable? Check the barrel adjuster on your cable make sure cable is adjusted properly.

Hey! Thanks for the reply, I do got that washer, bit it feels like the washer above, if you see it, should be tight and it just loose. Hard to explain.

 

Not by any chance that someone has a picture of their throttle cable and how it looks beneath?

I think the ring on the cable should be below the plate held by the Alan bolt. No that is incorrect.

But should not the ring be firm on the cable? Its just lose as its is now. So its not clamped to the wire at all.

I found another picture actually, before I had taken the thing apart (I did it to change the start-button) and the washer is correct. However, I do believe that this cable might've been bad, so I ordered a new one. Will be interesting to see.

That sounds best.. Control Cables are relatively cheap. A recent new clutch cable transformed my clutch actuation.

 

Hi! Would just like to update and the "washer" that was loose on my bike, should be firm. I think the wear and tear over 40+ year finally made its mark. And furthermore, I do wonder if the old wire was kind of worn out, like stretched, the new one is so much more crisp in every way and it a real game changer.

So thanks for your feedback on this and if anyone else sees this, the washer on the throttle cable should not move, it should be held by the other "washer".
