The easiest servicibility will include the air box.

I just got my carbs rebuilt and am trying to install them back. I got the carbs on the bike and started it up. They working great but the problem is I am unable to install the airbox boots on to the carburetors. Do I need to unistall the carburetors, install the airbox boots first and then install the carburetors? Thank you for any advice as I am out of my depth here.

I'm not sure what your bike is, I own a xj750seca, and xj650Maxim.

If your bike is similar the procedure should be to have the air boots inside their slots, airbox screws removed so it can go a little more back from carbs. You want to push in the air boots into the airbox, if they are very hard rubber, use a heat gun or hairdryer (don't do it too close too much to avoid damage, keep moving it) that will soften them enough so you can push them enough inside airbox by pressing on them (not all the way,) if you need to use a tool, don't use something to sharp like a screwdriver, find something hard enough but softer.

Once that is done you can put your carburators back onto the manifold, then you will need to get the boots out of the airbox onto the carbs, this process can be very annoying and time consuming if boots are hard, my seca I probably take about 45min of screaming and swearing, my maxim boots are super soft and takes 5minutes.

You can use heat again to get them out of the airbox too. I suggest putting back the middle boots first!

Aurel. Thank you very much for the detailed and systematic steps for the installation. I think that’s what I need to do. I have two motorcycles. One is 1981 XJ550 Maxim (this is the one I am struggling with), the other one is 1981 650 Midnight Maxim which has individual airfilter pods ( No airbox). I will post my struggles and successes soon. Thank you all for helping me out.
