Valve adjusting tool xj650

Hi
Anyone have the dimension for making this tool. Looks like a little work on a piece of angle iron.
Also on line source for shims

The tool is relatively inexpensive... it's the shim's that can gets pricey unless you can find someone that's willing to do exchanging of shims, I found a Dealer here in my area but I think that they end up using or running out of the common used same shim size. I wouldn't used the cheap aftermarket shims because they don't fit right in the bucket, that's my experience anyway. I don't like using the wire or plastic tie method or putting anything between the valve face for that matter. The tool worked great for me.

 

The tool is a PIA to use, I much prefer the wire method. Hogfiddles runs a shim pool here, reach out to him for details on swapping shims.

 

Dimensions are:

1. get a bag of zip ties at harbor freight
2. use them
3. Go ride

 

I know this might be sacrilege but has anyone surface ground shims? Using original ungound side up.

 

There are some who have done it, but it’s really pointless

 

Yep, when out in the backwoods with no money, I had to grind a shim or two.
Worked fine, being careful.
A decent micrometer or vernier is a must, though.

If you choose to go this route be very careful when rotating the engine with the tool in. If the cam lobe gets rotated into the tool you could very easily be looking for a new cylinder head. And disconnect the battery.

Other than that I've found the tool easy to use.
