Looking for a grippy rear tire for the 82 650 max, not concerned with wet roads (just ride it like a harley when roads are wet)

looking for something nice and soft that i dont mind replacing after 5000 miles of good cornering.

at 81 bucks each they dont look too bad for the money

    http://www.tireexpress.com/prod.cfm/cid/6701/pid/12496

any better sites to shop around for rubber?

Tread pattern is solely for wet usage correct?

    130/90/16 right?

Ive got a cheng shin on there that came with the bike, its got a bunch of cracks and want to replace it before i really start using the bike becides around town

Got the bike free from my neighbor since he let the gas dry up in the carbs.. after some cleaning its running very well... too bad there was 400 dollars of DMV fees that he didnt feel like paying... oh well.. not bad for it anyways! Just buying the bike from the DMV instead of him

It looks good becide my 83 920 virago too

Howdy and welcome neighbor (Camarillo here).
IRC isn't a name I'm familar with but I'm sure there are others of us that have. They will chime in shortly.
Glad to hear the Max went to an appreciative owner. I've a colortune and sync gauges if you need to tweak. Shoot me a PM and we'll get together.
I've all needed tools and am somewhat mobile with a truck and ramps.
    Glad to have you aboard.

Suggest Bridgestone BT45's..these are outstanding and come in sizes to suit. As good a tire as you will likely need, unless you are willing to fit (pay For!) Michelin pilot powers.
Try Chapparal Motorsports.com V good pricings quick Free delivery.

Thank you for the recomendation Danilo, ill go with your choice, as its worth another 10-15 dollars to get something that has a good reputation, and a brand name that i have heard of. I just want to be able to drag the pegs without drifting and / or meeting pavment.

I know tires are definately something you dont want to save a few dollars on, and you will regret it if you hit corners hard... the extra cash is well spent on good tires!

Robert, good to see someone closeby with xj experience. We should hit the road when i get some cash for that tire! DMV stole my lunch money! You have a pm too!

I've a used tire or two floating around here and can mount and balance them if you care to get moving sooner.

With seven bikes at home, I've been changing my own tires for years now.

I've bought a ton of tires from American Motorcycle Tire: http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/

I've always received great service. They are competitively priced on most tires too.

Just put a set of Bridgestone Spitfires on my nearly perfect SR500 and have a another set of Spitfires sitting in the garage for my Midnite 650. Hope to get them on the bike shortly.

Just put a set of BT45s on my son's 1993 600 SECA II. The BT45s are surely designed for more aggressive riding than the Spitfires.

Another vote for BT45s. I've used them for all my bikes where appropriate, and they stick like the proverbial to a blanket.

I have IRC RW-010's on my XJ. Good all around tire, but certainly not soft . Then again, IRC advertises them as touring or sport-toring, and the harder compund reflects that. Personally I'd prefer a slightly softer tire for the type of riding I do, but all in all I have absolutely no complaints about my IRC's.

Just to let you know, i love that Battlax BT45... It grips like crazy and feels very nice.. I will be getting another one of these when it runs out 8)

I got the 'high performance' v rated tire (not that the maxim can go that fast) but thats all they had in stock... the compounds are the same correct?

Either way i will be recommending this tire to anyone who asks in the future!

I take it the front battlaxes are recommended too?

I see you guys recommending the BT45, but I can't find it in the size 90/90/19 for an '81 XJ550, which I'm pretty sure is the "correct" size.

I was looking at this site: http://www.foreven.com/motorcycles/Tyres/YaSeca55.htm which lists some different figures, but can't find any other site and don't know how to do the metric tire conversion myself. I don't want to put all my proverbial eggs in this website's basket in case the guy made a mistake somewhere.

TheBostik - I'm sorry. I posted the Maxim numbers. The Yamaha website shows the same tire size as the site you are looking at.

100/90-19s or 3.25 19s will do the trick. Both are close enough for government work.

*note to self*. Just looking at a UK supplier for a BT45 front here, and the 3.25-19 is £46, whereas the 100/90-19 is £54. As above, it's almost the same tyre...

Already got my 110/90-18 for the rear waiting to go on. All I'm missing now is the matching front and some decent weather (almost forgotten what dry tarmac feels like..) and I'm all set to lean it to infinity.

    And Beyonnnnnnd......!

    Glad yr happy
But in All Seriousness They ARE designed intended to work as a Matched pair, and No it's not just to get you to spend another $75
Yr doing yerself a genuine disservice running on mismatched tires...avoiding Road Rash is priceless.
