Annoying kickstand

    Afternoon all

    Slightly weird question.
    I have a 1982 XJ750 Seca, bought earlier this year as a non running but complete bike. Took ages to get it sorted but its now done. Mainly carburation problems and whilst its not perfect its rideable (and so comfortable).

    My issue is with the kickstand, I'm 5'6" and short legged and I can manage the stand but its tricky. The bike is also used by my ex-wife (long story) who's about 5,3" and she struggles getting the bike onto the kickstand when sat on the bike. She doesn't have any issues riding the bike so I'm not planning on lowering it as I like the handling as it is just now.

    So couple of questions:
    1) if the bikes on its kickstand and you stand it upright the kickstand pops up on its own. Is this normal? Its the first bike I've had where it pops up without any ride input.
    2) Is there an easy way to make it easier to put down when sat on the bike.

    The bike leans further than I would expect when its on its kickstand so I'm thinking of extending the kickstand, probably with a 3/8" thick base plate, so the bike is a bit more upright.

    Got a pic of that kickstand and spring? I've never owned a 750 Seca but an automatic kickstand sounds like an awful idea. I suspect the spring is incorrect and installed wrong. They're a little tricky to install the correct way and my thought is someone just added a spring to keep it in the up position without thinking about how it is really supposed to work. If this is true then it would also explain why it is so hard to put down as well, the stock design pulls it both up and down with one spring by design.

    Yes and no.
    Yes, it might save your ass when you forget to flip it up some day.
    No, parking the bike in a windy spot will lead to the bike being dumped on the ground.

    Moto Guzzi thought it was a good idea once.
    I remember seeing them at the Toronto manufacturer show. There were factory reps standing next to each bike to catch it from falling with the public sitting on them.
    You need one foot on the stand so that means you’re tipping a big bike onto the stand on one foot

    The side stand on a Seca 750 is definitely NOT supposed to go up on its own. Something is wrong.

    The center stand however should lift up as soon as you roll off of it.

    Only time it retracts automatically is if you park facing down a hill.
    Yes. I've tested this accidentally.

    Thanks for the replies so far, very helpful to know it's definitely not correct.

    I've attached some pictures of it from today. It doesn't seem to match any of the parts diagrams that I have seen.
    The "bean" shaped piece of metal seems to be the culprit but I cant see how the springs would attach without it.
    There are also two springs, one within the other, I tried removing each one but the stand doesn't stay up at all unless both are fitted.

    Any suggestions, or does anyone have a picture of how it should be.

    Well, that's is not the correct set-up for your bike. That curved "bean-shaped" object is a link bracket, used on the XJ550 models (and many others thru the years). The XJ750 Seca uses a plastic "barrel" fitting that receives the switch plunger (although I don't think that has much to do with the issue you are having). The XJ750 Seca also uses a single spring, rather than the dual concentric springs. I think someone has replaced the side stand, although it 's not fully visible in the image. The 550 sidestands have a very prominent "leg" that extends off of the main shaft about half-way up the shaft....terminating in a round "ball"....and the entire shaft terminates at the bottom with a welded oval plate. The XJ750 Seca side stand has no side "leg" (just the spring "hook" about halfway-up the shaft), and at the bottom also has the welded oval metal plate but then the stand extends about another 6" or so away from that plate, and terminates with the "ball" on the end.

    I believe that the XJ750 Seca has a welded short "peg" on the sidestand mounting bracket (welded to the frame) that receives the upper end "hook" of the single spring. On the 550's (and others), the link bracket serves as the receiver for the upper end of the spring(s) and there is no peg on the welded frame bracket.

    This is all good to hear. Below are better pictures of the kickstand. From the descriptions above it sounds like I have the correct stand but the wrong spring and attachment method. Can you confirm this is the correct stand?
    If so then I think I only need part numbers 30 and 32 from the cmsnl diagram?

    Thats perfect, thanks.

    Will order a spring and bolt and set it all back to standard.
    No rush to do it as bikes are now parked for he winter, first snow fall of the season last night so wont be riding until Easter.

    Looks like the spring may be too short and the extension piece was added, which changes the way it works.
