Helping a buddy get his 2003 VXR running... Says it wouldn't start easily or run right. Check out this tasty treat I found in the tank! Bike was last licensed in 2019 and has been sitting in dry storage since his release from the joint. Bike only has 8072 miles on the clock and was really well cared for but now the entire fuel system has to come apart and get cleaned. The brown crud isn't rust but that crap from the ethanol fuel so it's not damaged, going to drop in a jug of screws and swish it up really good then light up the Weber.

Too late to edit, Its a VTX not VXR1800... had three things going plus the phone and wasn't paying attention. Can a moderator please change the thread header to reflect VTX? Thanks.

I just saw this and hope I can help. I see the rust issues so I hope you are taking care of that. Believe it not, if the fuel filter is working right then I would guess it is a grounding issue. On our VTX 1800,s there is a common ground under the tank on the front coil bolt. Honda put a big brass washer type thing under one of the coil bolts and left all the paint and powder coating on that area. So the only grounding is through the threads on the bolt to the frame.

I found a pic of mine when I was doing the mod.

If their bike was running poor and getting really bad MPG and the batter was not charging well, this is it. Very common issue you can take care of. I will caution you about the fuel tank. On mine, 2006 3C model, there is no fuel petcock. So caution with the removal of the gas from the tank. I ended up putting a in-line connector that is a fuel stop when disconnected.

Thankfully we got that bike sold & down the road, the one word that comes to mind when I think VTX1800 is albatross. The fuel pump and tank were just the appetizer in all this. Both injectors were glued shut inside, the regulator rotten and the coolant pump was beginning to weep... we got our full asking for it from a guy who stood maybe 5ft 6in. Yeah that was entertaining. He brought a trailer with a ramp and insisted on riding the bike up, a little misjudgement just before the end of the ramp and all momentum was lost with the bike coming down on the pipes. I'm not the biggest dude at 5ft 10 and 210 pounds but can pull my own weight no sweat, that VTX really had me gruntin'. Needless to say I'm sticking with my SECA.

Wow great story. I am really glad you got out from under it when you did. It does have some interesting flaws for sure, just a fun bike when running right. I picked mine up last yr for $2k and so far love it. This coming season will be the second yr of riding it. Between my 3 riding bikes, the VTX got the most miles on it this yr. 2002 Goldwing 1800 came in second, followed by my Bandit 1250s.
