82 XJ550 won't fire up and backfires... A lot

    Hi all, I took my 82 xj550 out the other night (in the rain) and all of a sudden it lost power and spluttered to a stop.
    Now the indicators don't blink, they're just constant and the bike won't turn over but it's backfiring a lot from the exhaust and carb and I'm getting flashes from the exhaust? Any ideas welcome!

    How is the battery?
    Is the bike still soaking wet or dry?
    Does it have an airbox?
    Was it running top knotch before this?

    New gel battery probably 6 months old, it's mostly dry now, no airbox as previous owner converted it, it ran pretty good before. It's just baffled me... However I have noticed that the indicators remain constant now and don't blink.
