I've got a 1983 900 Seca with a cracked frame in/around the kickstand area. I've taken the motor out and I'm ready to see if I can get a welder to fix it up for me. The question has come up about if a frame section from another model (750 Seca, 750 Maxim, 700 Maxim, etc...) could be used to replace the cracked section instead of welding the cracked section. Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Thanks! IMG_20241231_175944292_Edited.jpg

looks like the kickstand may have had a heavy whack,to twist the frame like that , first thing to check is, has the kickstand bracket "moved"
if so the frame will need to be heated up and the bracket straightened.
a better repair could be to weld an additional "half-pipe" to the inside of the frame, but ensuring there is enough clearance for the motor to fit

That's where the 900 frames fail due to corrosion. Definitely do what bensalf said about the half pipe.

I don't care if I ever use the side stand on this or my other XJs ever again...

So you're saying put a smaller diameter pipe on the inside of the frame being west back in, one on each end? That sounds like it should strengthen both joints a little.

I had rust in exactly the same spot . I think its where the tube is joined in production. I cut carefully with a cutting disc back until I had solid material . Then radiused a flat piece of plate and welded it in place . I didn't 20230125_095942.jpg 20230107_151809.jpg 20230107_151813.jpg have to go back far to get solid steel .

Did anyone know if I can cut a replacement section out of a 1981 650 Maxim frame and have it welded into the 900 Seca frame (with a smaller diameter pipe on the inside for after strength)?
