I have a 1980 Yamaha xj650 that I've been working on and finally got to start when it starts to warm up it idles fine but when it gets warm it shoots up to idling at 6500 any ideas on how to fix it I do have pod filters on it since it didn't come with the stock air box.

    Problem I've never solved.
I set the idle when it is hot and jiggle the throttle till that point when riding.
Generally about 2 mins of possibly stalling.
But I deal with it. An imperfect world I figure, hard enough to get the bike to have no flat spots.

Many will tell you (if they haven't in other posts you've made) that it's wise to work your way through the many, many posts on the forum about carburetor cleanliness, float setting, and vacuum-manometer adjusting the carbs to each other first.
There are also many posts regarding a racing idle, including one I posted in when I had the issue.
I also have pod filters because my bike also didn't have an airbox when I bought it.
It turns out that my carburetor throttle shaft needed oiled in a few strategic places, because the return spring wasn't fully closing the butterflies after the bike warmed up. Once I added some lubrication where I could reach, it snaps closed every time and the racing idle went away.

Hi Preston. How are things up in the Albertville??

I would also want to check to make sure the enrichment plungers are closing all the way (i.e. make sure the "Choke" is off) when it warms up.

It should idle fine even without filters or an airbox.

what has been done to the bike?

High idle is typically an air leak or carbs that are not bench sync’d properly if separated or need final syncing.
