This is driving me nuts! What the hell are all these wires coming and going to?? There are 8 coming off the regulator! This harness is so Overredundent! Can anyone send me a wiring diagram or something to help out? What are the absolutely nessesary things on the bike aside from the regulator, and canceling unit? (I wont be having turn signals at the moment does the canceling unit perform any other funtions?)

Also what are the 2 relay seeming things on the driver side under the seat?

    I hate japanese wiring...

Has anyone used a different tach? Ive been looking all over ebay for a 2" one and can only find one that goes to 10k rpms, which i figure is close enough to the redline anyway...

You should be able to find a good schematic in a Haynes manual ($15). They are still in print and easily obtained. I'm referring to my beloved H model for the following information. The wires into the regulator are used to input the output of the A/C generator (3 white wires there), supply 12VDC to the battery and ignition system (1 red wire), provide a ground (1 black wire), and a current sensing coil input on the brown and green wires to help regulate the voltage output ( 1 green wire and 1 brown wire). There, that should be a brief whats-what for you. The relays you mention should be the Voltage Regulator/Rectifier and the Transistor Controled Ignition module (they are the only box looking things I can think of in the location you described). This would be a bit simpler if you would pass on what your model is. Could you post your type with your signature perhaps? I'm not up on tachometer types so here is where I get off.

While we're on the subject, I just bought an old harness off an '82 650R. My current harness seems to be in good shape, but I want to learn about and build my own harness as a project. I'll be leaving a few things out, such as the sidestand switch and turn signals. I'm seeking advice on how to build a bullet-proof harness with top-of-the-line components.

For example, what are the best connectors? What is the best wire? What can I do with one harness that a manufacturer won't do with umpteen thousand harnesses to build?

I know, I know, I just wrote the other day asking how to remove my turn signals, so this may seem far above my skill level. Well, it is, but I want to try anyway. In some perverse sense it seems like it'll be fun. Besides, it will really make this bike "mine."

    Regards,
    Furyus

Coming from a person that just re-did all thier wiring top to bottom, i'll tell you if you can connect two pieces of wire together, you'll be just fine. here's a wiring diagram i found, then printed out, it was most helpful. Just remeber that a lot of the components are no longer nessacary due modern electronic advancement. Find a friend that's good with a soldering gun and he can make you some solid state electronic relays that signifigantly outperform the OEMs weigh less and use less electical power, which are always an issue in bikes. plus if you're looking to switch to HID LED turns signals, you'll need electric flashers as they won't drain the nessacary voltage to flash the current ones.

    There ya go

I have been using Amphenol connectors and Fast-on reinforced chrimp connectors. They are original equipment so all my fixes or upgrades look factory. I purchase the bulk of my materials from a company called Harnes in Orangevale California (home, sweet home, used to deliver their paper as a boy). Here is their link http://www.harnes.com/phpay/login.php?s ... 87f132a22b or pull up harnes.com/ on google. I just checked the site out and they are not showing any pictures, bugger. I have been using them for about 8 years now and they are fantastic. Be sure to use environmental heat shrink to seal your connections and splices. I chrimp and then solder my connections to provide security and durability (any corrosion floats off of solder with just a touch of flux and heat, making the connection new again). Extracting the connector bodies is not terribly challenging but do be careful, they are a pain to find replacements for unless you aren't monitarily challenged like me. Wire replacement is a bit of a chore because you need about 19 different colors (13) and gauges (3) of wire to build a fresh harness. This can get pricey. If anyone is of a mind, I can build them but I'm out of space and time right now. If I can get the stupid garage built with the shelves I've got, I could accomplish miracles. I would encourage anyone to try their hand at rebuilding what they have provided it hasn't corrosion wicked into the stranding of the wires on the harness. If this has happend, you need a new harness. I used to teach soldering and certify techicians on MILSPEC standards and built hundreds of cables for all manner of aircraft (even went to the Navy's cable connector repair school, thanks Uncle Sam), so I'm perfectly at home building or repairing these harnesses, their easy. Let me work on the logistics but I might be able to start repairing harnesses for you guys in a while. If there is enough demand, I might even start building new harnesses. Another point, if anyone has old harnesses they don't need, I'm collecting them to harvest old connectors to rebuild new harnesses. I'll pick up the tab on shipping for choice units. (they have to have pieces I use or need, I'm not after some exotic oddity) I guess I'll have to start looking at this soon. All the best fellas.

    Ian,

You don't have a scan of the wiring diagram for the 650/750 RJ/RK do you?
It's the one thing I still need for my manual connection.

Well I did it. I finished the wiring harness today. Much easier once I realized the guy that sold it to me was an idiot. He told me it was an '83, so I have been using 83 schematics for the wiring harness. Switched over to the 85 schematics and bam, what a dream.

Also made up my LED tail lights. 2 clusters of LEDs that act as normal lights, and then i made a light bar that is a scanner during normal park lights, and then flashes during braking, just to get peoples attention.

Since the idiot before me cut out the flasher relay for no apparent reason, i cut out that section completely and used a Cluster of LEDs wit a strobe diode on them so I just provide constant current.

Almost finished my new rear fender, 1 last section to cut and fit tommarow.

When im done this thing will look pretty close to a Vmax in style, somewhat street fighter ish in the back and drag cruiser all over.

Pictures when im done... I dont go for that Teaser crap.
