I have a 1985 XJ700X Maxim. I just bought it today and I figured out somebody had had the starter apart because it was making grinding noises I took the starter apart to find that they had improperly installed the reduction gears, I fixed that and put the starter back in and realized it wasn't catching, so I pulled it back out and figured out it's running backwards. Do I have the wrong brush plate? It seems to be opposite of what I see in pictures for listings and on the brush replacement post. Meaning I think the positive brush and the negative brush are occupying the wrong locations. I followed the replace brushes posts instructions and it still runs backwards so it has to be the brush plate being the wrong plate right? Are all the XJ brush plates the same? Did this come out of an xs or something?

The plate can be installed so that it turns the starter either clockwise, or counterclockwise.

Your plate looks a bit different, but the overall shape doesn't matter so much as opposed to whether the alignment notch in the plate is:

    a) in a the correct position on the plate, and....

    b) that the plate is installed correctly.

From what I recall, the alignment notch in the plate should be closer to the positive brush, rather than to the negative brush as your image shows.

yeah from everything i can find the brush plate is from a Yamaha Ovation snow mobile... but i've ordered the correct unit from ebay. i should be able to start the bike by friday. with these brushes in the opposite positions it's impossible to get this thing to turn the right direction as far as I can tell
