I've recently been contacted by an old member of the XJ Community looking to pass on his XJ. He bought it new in 1982 and last had it running about 2003 before storing it in an in-laws barn. The barn is now up for sale and the bike needs a new home. From his last e-mail:

    "> Good Morning Dwayne
    > Thanks for the response. I guess the best thing you could say about the
    > bike is that it is complete with no damage. The problems that are
    > evident are the brake fluid is no longer fluid and the exhaust
    > developed holes in it at an early age. Most of the paint is showing
    > signs of deterioration. I imagine all rubber parts, hoses, tubing etc
    > would have to be replaced. The tires were new in the mid 2000,s and less
    > than 100 Km on them. I realize that they have deteriorated but
    > unbelievably were still holding air when I looked last weekend. We will
    > be back out to the property this weekend so we will grab some pictures.
    > I assumed it would only appeal to an XJ fan or "collector" and I'm not
    > really in a position to part it out. As far as " How much I'm hoping to
    > get", I really don't know. That was one of the questions I was going to
    > ask you. My feelings are , I'm hoping to find a good home for it and If
    > I could get a few bucks out of it, that would be great. I realize it
    > will be a gamble for someone to take on this project."

He sent along a couple of pictures, which I put up here:

That's all I know. I have no personal affiliation or skin in this game. If someone here is interested, I'll pass on his contact info by PM.

Lots of potential there. Lots of work and fair amount of money too but very saveable. Do you know if your friend has the paperwork for it? That makes hugely more useable. I am in the midst of re-habbing a similar non-Midnight XJ650 that did not have complete paperwork. Good luck, I really hope it is saved.

Rare bike, very nice looking when all polished up.
