Well, in fairness to the bike,
-if you want a kickstart bike, go get a kickstart bike.
-Many replies were made on where to get a starter, didn’t seem like you were taking them up.
-Typically, a rebuild kit will solve the issue. If not, typical a readily available replacement will solve the issue. If not, typically, opening the engine a replacing the starter gear inside solves the issue. If not, typically you did wrong.
-Typically, these bikes are generally bullet-proof if they’re given reasonable preventative maintenance.it’s a rare instance to find an XJ lemon. MAYBE you got one, though I doubt it.

    now a few questions:
    what starter did you get?
Where did you get it from?
What starter gear assembly did you get, and where did you get it from?
What manual did you follow to install it?

Like the bit about few real lemons, I've bought basket cases on pallets, with some carb cleaning they rode perfectly - so Yamaha got a lot right with these..

hogfiddle, i wont spend big money on one, the magnets inside breakup, the guts wornout....its a 650 turbo motor so the black boxes were different and the starter could have been a 750. i dont need a manual to put one in.its cut and dry except to shim it up. i got one that worked fine for 75. that my limit. how much is a new one.

Maybe you do, Yamaha never made shims for this engine and the service manual doesn't have a procedure for shimming the starter.

You state in your other post that the "starter gear ingages then spins grinding gears" so:
    • Your battery is either junk or you have a wiring issue where the starter is not receiving the full amps the battery can provide.
    • The starter clutch is worn and will not stay engaged. You stated in the other thread that you replaced that though....big job.
    • The starter needs rebuilt. You haven't answered this one previously.
These starters are dime a dozen, 80 - 83 650/750/900 Maxim/Seca and 85/86 700.......all the same. Easy rebuild, they are simply a motor. All the "engaging" takes place inside the engine on separate components.

I'm having trouble understanding how you can go through the significant work effort and expense to replace the starter clutch but are struggling with a simple motor. Jumping on an XJ forum where there are many enthusiasts and stating "these bikes are a piece of shit" is not a great way to get help either.

Starters are available brand spanking new for $400. If you've spent the money and time to do the clutch and are having trouble with used starters or the rebuild then maybe this is your best route.

Shim one up? Not sure what you mean. You just push it into the hole, then install the long bolt and the short bolt, then attach the wire to the post.

as has been stated before, check with xj4ever for a new one. If you don’t know the price of a new one, then you haven’t checked with him yet.

Thanks very much for your time replies. There's a history, I say that because I've gone the full Monty, replacing engine, rod through the upper casing,750 to 650turbo engine. It would have been junked by anybody else. 600.00 for an engine.....400.00 for a starter.... No, homey don't play that....im still in the market, I've got it starting first push of the button. Pat myself on the back. I rebuilt it before I rode it around the corner. Attitude problem, it dumped me going to the store like a bucking brocco. Pieces of shit......figuritively.....blood,sweat and $$$$$$. I'm past the junk, with the engine change. Its running for now. Haven't taken it out the yard working up the goomby. Shut it off, will it start.... Feeling. Thanks again for your input.....

As of 5/13/25, the bike needs a starter. The present one is spun its final spin. I had two starter gears, changed the gear and that fixed the problem but now the starter doesn't even crank the engine. I took plugs out and it turned the engine but won't with compression. Fryed. So...any starters out there....that gentleman said there a dime a dozen. Ok.......thanks....
