Found a reference to aftermarket rebuild kits not including beanie screens (at bottom of seat) and the existing ones don't fit, not that they're good to re-use I presume, so is it ok to install without those screens? should I make sure I've got an in-line filter if I do?

Yea just install the inline filter. In all fairness it is actually better than the beanie screens. This due to the fact that he beanie screens stop the fuel gunk inside the carbs and the filter stops the gunk before the carbs.
