Yep, the popo was looking for moi! Last year I
sold a 92 Buick Century to a girl. My wife met
with her to take the money and get the bill of
sale signed. Thank God she did that. My wife
didn't know to take the tag off the car so the
    girl left with it.
You guessed it...she never went to the
courthouse and changed the title. The tag expired
back in August. She is still driving around on
it. But that isn't what I got called into the
P.D. for. Seems she has been keeping company with
someone who is my height, hair and eye color. Now
why a young chick like her would choose a short
fat bastard like me is another matter, but
needless to say when the two of them tried to
pass some forged checks at a local grocery store
they got the tag number of the car.
So officer Brown runs the tag and finds me! Same
height, hair and eye color. All at once I became
a very interesting dude! (Funny, that never
happens in a bar with chicks) Anyway he calls me
and asks me to come down to the P.D. station.
Won't tell me over the phone what is going on
just that he wants to see me soon. (that never
happens with chicks either) So I emptied my
wallet of everything but my D.L. ( I knew to do
this because my dad was a LEO) and call my wife
to take me there so they can't confiscate my XJ
if they lock me up. I have enough forethought to
bring the bill of sale with me. How did I know to
do that you ask? Because back in November the
Sheriff's dept came to see me looking for my old
Buick which had been involved in a hit and run.
After convincing them it wasn't my car anymore
they left. Never heard about it again. So
naturally I though this new inquiry had something
to do with the Buick. That bill of sale is the
reason I can laugh and email about this. I could
tell by the look on his face he thought he had
me! Sure was fun to ride my XJ back home tonight.

So moral of the story people; do things right if
you sell a car or bike and keep records! Cause
    you can't trust people! ;)

So what did you guys do today?

What is the reason to leave all but your D.L. at home?

If you believe you are innocent then show up with ID. No ID looks suspicious. No ID also gives the officer more paper work to do to prove you are who you say you are. The DL will be returned to you unless a suspension order is given. All your other stuff can be held as evidence.

I had the same thing happen to me back in 2000. I was living in the UK, and was getting ready to come back home, and a friend wanted to buy my car for his girlfriend over there. I sold the car, signed the forms and was going to mail it off before I went home for XMAS. My friend said that he would take care of the paper work and not to worry. I was home for a week or so and the local police station called me up and wanted to talk about a hit and run the week before with my car in the UK. Funny it took several hours and some phone calls to convince them it wasn't me. Ended up my friends girlfriend never sent in the paper work, and she was to scared at the time to talk to the cops and tell them it was her. So needless to say, my friend owed me lots of pops when I got back. Moral of the story Make sure you do the paper work and send it in yourself...

Yep, but it was also due to me living out of his jurisdiction. He couldn't come to me even to ask me questions.

I've had irresponsible buyers screw me twice, landing me in federal court too. Had to provide bill of sale for each. I failed to mail in the change of ownership papers straight away. Learned the hard way I'm afraid. Now I don't trust a soul unless it is my immediate family.
