IMG_4364.jpeg I love the bike so far just because its the most interesting bike ive worked on so far, but i know i need air filters and i know im leaking coolant, nothing else (i also need a battery). when doing a go over on the bike i noticed some threads missing whatever they previously had connected, im pretty sure most of it is due to the lack of a factory air filter but i wanted to know if i was missing something really important. That being said the bike cranks and makes good compression from what i can tell but definitely needs more tlc. Ive included pictures of the coolant leak and the partless threads. Thanks yall!

PS the oil on the ground is from a jeep i no longer own

you do not have the correct starter motor.
It might be for an XJ550, that's some bodge there.
One of the original bolts is snapped off in the case, that's happened to me, easy fix.
    You need the correct starter.

or, could it be, the starter motor is upside down, and the two top holes bolt to the two screw holes,
you dont say what bike it is o_O

It’s a Maxim-X, coolant leaks not possible on any other XJ
The 650-900 and Maxim-X starter motor has mounting bolts in vertical position. The 550’s are horizontal. I can’t believe anyone would attempt that bodge

The one starter bolt broke off, but the top of it might be enough to get it out. Soak it in penetrating oil and then go to work on removing it. Looks to be in a good area to reach compared to some of the bolts that brake. As for the starter, wrong starter housing for sure. As @Simmy mentioned, the body needs to bolt vertically to the engine. Be thankful you didn't or have not hurt the starting gears with improper alignment.

My Turbo was broken off same place.
Access is great as you can see. I had to install a thread insert.

On the coolant leak there is an O-ring which seals that pipe to the engine.
    This leak is common.

im going to work on that bolt more later, for now the bodge job seems to be working and i cant afford a new starter so i think im going to commit a cardinal sin and just keep using it as now. Im going to replace the O-Ring soon around the same time i pull the carbs off, im pretty sure the fuel lines are gummed up bad and the needles and floats need cleaning, do yall know what size oring that is or should i just find out myself? also if you know anyone with a new starter that would be great. I still love the bike but its ended up being more of a project than i expected ‍, i appreciate all the help ive been getting on here

How was the motor connected to the crankcase, am I missing something? Was there an L bracket bodge or something? Beware you don't damage the gear the starter motor engages with inside the case. These bikes are usually more of a project than expected as they may have been out of service for years. How can you keep the starter motor square to the crankcase opening. Just saying you don't want more damage.
