I think that the information about the XJ700X on the internet is incorrect.
    More specifically, the float level.
Everywhere it is given as 17.5 (+/- 1mm).
Even in the manual (for maximX):

And this is the correct value for the air-cooled XJ700 (with 2 valves per cylinder) and many others.
But not for the XJ700X with Mikuni BS33 (CV)!

    Why do I think so?

    This manual for the carburetor:
    "BS32 (32mm) for GS550, 650, 750, 850
    – BS34 (34 mm) for GS1000 & 1100 – also 450
(although the 450 configuration is somewhat
    different)
    – BS36 (36 mm) for the GS1150"

    says 22.5mm:

And I know that MaximX has BS33, which is not on this list, but the float chamber looks identical to mine:

    I measured the current state and they are: 23mm, 25.6mm, 22.4mm, 22.25mm.

So they are not exact, but 3 are within the range for BS32 and BS34.

In addition, it is physically impossible to set 17.5mm on my carburetors, I would have to crush the floats.

I will set 22.5mm on all of them and let you know how it goes.

Interesting, maybe that's why I couldn't set them dry last time. Ended up measuring on a wet bench setup and little adjustment steps, lots of work.

EVERY manual for the XJ series has at least one (but often more) error(s).
The correct information about setting float height can be found in the DYI section of this forum, and here http://www.xj4ever.com/setting fuel levels.pdf
