I have now got around to starting my top end rebuild.
The head and barrels were a "pig" to remove as the tie rods had siezed making removal very difficult. I did damage several fins in the process but had purchased a spare head and barrels which are refurbished ready to put on. Piston #1 rings were fully compressed and stuck inside the piston grooves - This is where I had blow-by and smoke from the crankcase breather - The spare barrels I had refurbished came with pistons so these now have new rings. The barrels on #1 cylinder were very scored.
My question is the "copper washers" - There were no copper washer at all on my original top end. Not on the main domed head bolts or the 2 at the carb side of the head.
It is difficult to tell from the image but I assume the 2 washers at the rear of the head go on the 2 bolts that protrude through the barrels from the head - see images.
My gasket set did not include copper washers. I do have standard copper washers but not special "crush" washers - Can I use standard copper washers or will that cause issues/leaks?

Is that a 650 YICS engine?

Unless the Euro spec is somehow different, there are no copper sealing washers on those studs that go from the head to the jugs. Of course the four o-rings that seal the YICS passages between the head and jugs are important.

There are copper sealing washers under the head nuts on the outside of the #4 cylinder - that is because there is oil flow up and around those outer head studs that feeds oil up to the cams.

Hi Dan, no it is a 550 YICS engine (both are very similar I believe.
The copper washers, I think, don't go between the head and jugs but on the outside under the 2 nuts holding the 2 together.
That is what confused me on the workshop diagram/image. It did appear to be between.....
It was only a few hours ago that I thought they must go on the bolt thread after it has passed through the barrels then put the securing nut on....the yellow arrow on my "Copper-washer" image
I understand the 2 on the RHS of the head.

OK, I've never been into a 550 engine, so I may be corrected, but...

I don't see any reason why those would need to be sealing washers unless the YICS passage somehow intersects and opens into that hole where the stud goes through - in which case I would think you'd need sealing washers on the top and bottom of the hole.

Copper crush washers are used in the following positions on most engines:

    - the two crankcase-to-cylinder head studs, RH outer position front & rear, under teh acorn nuts as mentioned by Dan Gardner above
    - on YICS engines, the chamber passage bolts (at the right and left end of the YICS chamber).
    - oil pan drain plug
    - middle gear drain bolt
    - on XJ650-up engines, the neutral position switch
    - on engines with automatic chain tensioners, the spring/ratchet retaining bolt at the end of the tensioner case
    - on some (many) XJ550 - 900 engines, on the two cylinder head casting passage plugs (bolts), located on the upper rear sides of the cylinder head
    - on XJ550/600 engines, the primary chain tensioner oil pipes
    - on XJ650 Turbo engines, the turbo oil delivery pipe end fittings
    - on water-cooled XJ700-X and XJ750-X, at various positions for the water cooling pipes drain bolts
    - on all water cooled XJ700-X and XJ750-X engines, and all XSJ1100 and XS1100 engines, the oil delivery pipe fittings

    Thanks guys.
So, I'm still confused as to what that first image is trying to tell me?
It is definitely headed/ labelled "copper washer".
    Awful picture though....

My best guess is that they are referring to the copper washers that go with the bolts to seal the ends of the YICS passage (??????)

Hi Dan, I'm not sure who's workshop manual it is. It was one I found online but there is no referance to the publisher. There is no mention of these washers in my Cymer manual. I don't suppose there is any harm using a copper washer on those 2 bolts on the outside of the YICS tunnel.
