Virago 750 clanking

I have a couple of Virago 750s that I want to start working on. I got both super cheap, but they need a solid amount of work.

One turns over but with a severe sounding grinding or clanking sound. Depending where the cylinders land, it does ignite and start but very quickly peters out. I have not compression tested yet, but I assume the piston may be busted.

The other virago I moved the working solenoid and battery over to. It does not turn over at all, and the clutch cable jerks it in and out of neutral at a slight touch.

I think I'm interested in getting into the engine of the first virago. I'm curious if there's initial thoughts how deep I have to go.

 

The 700 and 750's were known for round off the starter gear. When pushing the starter button it will be hit or miss if the gear engages with the flywheel or not. There are many vids and posts on this topic and how to fix it. If you have a dremel, you can do it for cheap. The aftermarket gear is around $100, and I found it is better, but does not work as they say.
