1991 XJ900F black paint code

Hi all

I have been fortunate enough to acquire a 1991 XJ900F here in the UK which has only done a genuine 12,300 miles. It seems to be totally original and even has all the original stickers on the tank, wind shield, frame and even one on the wiring loom. It’s truly in amazing condition.

But, (there’s always a but!) it does have a few scratches on one of the side panels and bottom of the belly pan.

I want to get some paint to sort out the affected areas. The paint scheme is all black with what looks like a light metallic or ‘pearlised’ finish.

Does anyone know what the colour code is, where I can find it or what might be the nearest match? There’s a company here which thinks they might be able to mix up paint to the correct spec if they have a code. Short of that I’d have to send them a side panel or something to try and get close to.

Just type into your search engine "black metallic 2 yamaha motorcycle paint" and see what comes up. I reckon you should be able to get it from a Yamaha dealer though.

Unfortunately, we don't offer (except some leftovers) any body-colored paints anymore......our supplier got bought out and lost/destroyed all of the mixing formulas for all of the paints (a long, sad story and one that really pissed me off).

A very brief google search revealed this (possibly) accurate information: "The paint color codes for the 1991 Yamaha XJ900 models include Dark Bluish Gray 1 (8D) and Shiny Black (NA)". However, I would verify the paint colour code via the following method:

- at a Yamaha dealer or parts re-seller of Yamaha parts, find a PARTS DIAGRAM and navigate to the section that has body parts (Cowling, Side Covers, etc.). Find a painted body part in the diagram, and observe the factory part number for that part. The last 2 digits of the part number indicates the colour code. Example, after a brief internet search:

1991 XJ900F model ID 4BB1 (EUROPE) which, I note, may not be the same as a UK-version 1991 XJ900F, but it's the closest that I could find)

Yes, note that in the above examples....and for the same model/year..... you can have different colour codes for the same "color": SILKY WHITE can be either GE, or 4Y, or W3 (although the last 2 codes probably are the code that applies to a part that is painted in 2 different colors (SILKY WHITE/DYNASTY BLUE), and the "GE" color code is probably the "real" code for a Silky White paint. "P0" seems to be the color code for BLACK METALLIC 2.

Is the above confusing? Yes, it sure is. Also, note that your bike may not have used the same colors (and thus color codes) as the 1991 XJ900F model ID 4BB1 (EUROPE) examples given above.


The factory Colour Code will likely be of little help (even though it's nice to know what it is).....unless there is a vendor out there that has the old paint colour codes-to-mixing-formula books, the colour code won't be of use. And those types of shops may not exist any more, but it never hurts to ask). It is the PAINT MIXING FORMULA that is the valuable information, and it may be that you'll need to visit a local automotive paint supplier and see what they can create for you (taking an un-faded sample of the color is useful, and typically the most-unfaded paint can be found on the backside of a side panel, or underneath the rear cowling panel, or UNDERNEATH A FUEL TANK OR SIDE COVER EMBLEM, OR UNDERNEATH WHERE A STRIPE WAS COVERNG THE PAINT.

By the way, the paint colour code is not included anywhere in the VIN of the bike, and by rumor, the only place that it appears in on the original selling invoice, when the bike was first purchased from Yamaha.
