It seems that the clutch and kickstand switch works opposite of the way it should. pull the clutch in and the bike doesn't want to start. let the clutch out and it wants to start in gear. Put the kick stand down it starts lift up kickstand and it shuts of. Does anyone out there know a solution. I thought it might have something to do with one of the relays

    The answer is:

Your Safety Circuit Relay is NOT a Safety Relay. It's a Generic Relay.

Having a generic relay in place of the Safety Relay is quite dangerous.

The two relays are wired differently:

    Generic:
    +_____+
    X_____X

    Safety:

    +_____X
    +_____X

Order-up a Safety Circuit Relay and replace the WRONG ONE you have in there and you wil be in business!

    Uncle (Fester)---sorry, couldn't resist!

Anyway, here is some useful info on the relays.

The kickstand relay has 4 wires going to it:
Red/white tracer, Black/white tracer, Blue/yellow tracer, and Black solid.
This relay should have a BLUE paint spot on or near the "locking tab" where the wiring harness connector plugs into it.

The clutch safety relay also has 4 wires going to it:
Red/white stripe, a second Red/white stripe (Haynes & Yamaha wire diagrams says white w/red stripes for a 900), Sky blue solid, Black/yellow stripe.
This relay should have NO paint spot on or near the "locking tab" where the wiring harness connector plugs into it.

Check to see whether your relays are reversed. The are both 4-terminal, small square "can" type relays, so it's easy to plug them back into the wrong locations in the harness if they were both removed at the same time.

Bypassing is an option, and works great until it doesn't, and you have a mess or injury on your hands. The relays are there for a purpose, we all make mistakes sometimes, especially when we're trying to show off for the girls..........and a by-passed relay can make for an awfully embarrassing moment at such times.
