I have seen mention of replacing the steering bearings with tapered ones, but I can't seem to find a source for them. Can anyone help me find some?
    Thanks.

I got mine from partsnmore.com. $40 for the set. They seem to be good to deal with and quick shipping.

Thank you for the quick replies and info. Just got my bike. It is very unstable trying to drive in a straight line at slow speeds and unstable while turning. I am going to get the wheel bearings as well.

Check the balance of that front tire as well -- and if it's old, it could have snapped cords causing vibration and stability issues as well.

Oh - and the most common set of tapered roller bearings I've seen is the AllBalls set - part # SSY500 (most of the XJ's). Should be able to get them from any motorcycle shop.

If you get the tapered bearings, spend the extra few bucks and get some that are made someplace other than China. So far have been unhappy with the set that I bought. Seems like I am constantly having to adjust mine. Either too tight or too loose. When I upgrade my forks from the 82 model to the 83, I am changing to some that are either made in the USA or JAPAN, Prefer the good ol USA!!! I have had tapered bearings in thepast and something just doesnt feel right..almost like the races are not heat treated right and are still soft, kind of like the races are galling up on the bearings.
