so more and more now my speedo cable likes to squeel as i ride my maxim... i thought maybe it was just itching for some lube so i put a bit of triflow in the top and it seemed to help for a bit but now its come back and is doing the same thing... this time i decided to pull the whole cable out of the housing, clean and re-grease it.... same story, stopped for a few miles but now its back at it... i don't see any super sharp bends in the cable that might cause this.. is it just an old faulty cable? anybody have any similar problems?

Most of them cables are running inside a plastic sleeve. If it's squeeling, it wore thru the plastic and it running metal on metal. I suggest you remove the cable and drip some oil (motor oil, not WD40) and let it run all the way out the bottom so you know it coated the entire cable. Then install it back on the bike and take it for a ride. If it still squeels, replace the cable. Don't use grease on a cable. It won't get into the housing far enough to do any good.

Are you sure it is the cable? Or is it the bearing in the speedo head?

hmmm Micarl i think your speculation sounds a little more correct cause it does sound like its coming from right behind the speedo.... i'll pull 'er apart tomorrow to find out!

Just pull your cable off the speedo head and shoot you some WD-40 up there. Mine does this same thing every year. I tried greasing it once but that actually made it worse. It collected to much debris and became noisier more often.

If it works it's better than what I've tried - squirting PTFE squirty stuff through the opening for the trip reset - then I'll give it a go. It has never worked for long and I've had to change a couple of speedos or three - and they're not getting any cheaper.
